What did you do this past week?

This past week I didn’t do too much because of the winter storm and resulting power outages. My house is in an area that was doing rolling blackouts for quite a few days, so I wasn’t able to do much. After things returned to normal my SWE group was able to meet up and start brainstorming for the project.

What’s in your way?

The biggest obstacle I’m facing right now is my own lack of knowledge when it comes to React, AWS, APIs, and other technologies that we has to use for IDB1. My group is mostly also in a similar place regarding previous web dev knowledge, so we’re having to figure out a lot of things. Also, I’m waiting for to receive a token for 2/3 of our APIs.

What will you do next week?

The coming week, I plan on watching even more videos and doing tutorials to get comfortable with all the new technologies and tools we’re having to use for the project. We also need to make significant progress on the project itself, given that it’s due on Saturday.

If you read it, what did you think of the Single Responsibility Principle?

I read the paper on the Single Responsibility Principle, and I can see how adhering to this principle will reduce complexity in the way we deal with changes in the requirements of some given responsibility. Separating responsibility will allow for the codebase to be flexible and more easier adaptable to changes.

What was your experience of IDB1 and reduce?

IDB1 is looking like a difficult project, since I don’t have any previous web dev experience and neither does the majority of my team. I think I’ll learn a lot from the project though, so I’m excited about that. The reduce function was pretty easy to implement. My group was able to come up with a straightforward solution very quickly.

How did you fare in the storm?

I fared okay in the storm! Like I previously mentioned, I had rolling blackouts for a few days, so power, heat, and Internet were the only issues I had to deal with. My area wasn’t under a boil notice, and none of our pipes burst, so water wasn’t an issue, thankfully.

What made you happy this week?

Even though the winter storm brought along a plethora of issues, I had fun going out in the snow with my sisters. We have some sleds, so we found a big hill and went sledding!

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week is daily todo lists. I’ve been making a todo list of all the things I need to finish on a certain day, and it’s really been keeping me organized. I also find that I’m not wasting as much time when I have a list full of responsibilities in front of me.
